Welcome to Monticello Inn and Cottage

Monticello Inn & Cottage rests on ten peaceful acres just outside Charlottesville, Virginia, where the beauty of the Blue Ridge foothills meets the deep history of Albemarle County. Surrounded by vineyards, historic estates, and quiet countryside, the bed and breakfast offers a place to slow down, reconnect, and experience one of Virginia’s most remarkable regions.

At the heart of the property stands a thoughtfully restored 19th-century church, originally part of neighboring Morven Plantation and built to serve the Slate Hill community. For generations, the structure welcomed local congregations who gathered here for worship, fellowship, and life’s most meaningful moments. Today, this “Sacred Space” has been carefully preserved and reimagined as the main inn, where original architectural details and refined modern comforts come together to create intimate, luxurious guest rooms designed especially for couples seeking a romantic and distinctive retreat.

Set along the wooded edge of the property, our private cottages are newly constructed and thoughtfully designed to complement the historic character of the main inn. Surrounded by trees and natural beauty, they offer a peaceful sense of privacy while remaining just a short walk from the Sanctuary. These spacious accommodations are ideal for individuals or guests traveling with children or pets, offering a greater sense of privacy and seclusion.

A Sacred Space, Reimagined: The Story
of Monticello Inn & Cottage

The owner, Mary, is a formally trained pastry chef with a deep love of historic architecture. It was her dream to create and run a bed and breakfast in Virginia, where she is from. The land was originally part of Morven Plantation and was donated to the community to build the Slate Hill Meeting House in the 1830s. In 1868, the structure officially became the Slate Hill Church, and the cemetery was also granted to the community by Morven’s owner. In its earliest years, Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian, and Christian congregations shared the space, holding services in rotation and welcoming all members of the surrounding community. During the height of its active membership from the 1950s through the 1990s, the church was thoughtfully renovated and expanded, with additions completed in 1958 and again in 1979. Over time, the congregation gradually grew smaller, and by 2018, with only a handful of active members remaining, the church closed its doors. The property was then donated to Antioch Baptist Church.

In 2023, Mary purchased the property and began plans to bring the vision of Monticello Inn & Cottage to life. With a passion for Virginia history, hospitality, and the natural beauty of the land, Mary’s goal was to create a boutique inn experience that honors the past while welcoming today’s traveler.

Today, Monticello Inn & Cottage stands as a thoughtfully restored historic Virginia inn—what we like to call a “Sacred Space”—where heritage, architecture, and peaceful surroundings come together. Guests are invited to slow down, reflect, and experience the quiet beauty of Albemarle County—just minutes from Monticello, Highland, and Morven, and surrounded by Virginia’s renowned wine country. We are honored to preserve this special place and share its story with every guest who walks through our doors.
